The contact form is the single most important interactive element on most small business websites and the single most neglected. The default version — name, email, message, submit — was state of the art in 2008 and has barely changed since. The way visitors expect to interact with a website in 2026 has moved on a long way.
This piece walks through four advanced form patterns we routinely build for Devon businesses, what each one solves, and why a basic contact form is leaving customers unconverted.
Pattern 1: the interactive quote request
Standard "request a quote" forms produce vague enquiries. Advanced ones produce briefs.
We are ready to talk things through!
Contact HereA Newton Abbot plumber's quote form, built well, starts with one question: what do you need? Boiler repair, leak, bathroom install, full renovation. Conditional logic then shows the right follow-up fields for that choice. Boiler repair make, model, age. Bathroom photos of current space, preferred style, rough budget range. Leak severity, location, how long it has been happening.
The submission lands as a real job description, not a question mark. The plumber can quote on the back of it without three follow-up emails. Lead-to-quote conversion typically doubles when we make this change.
Pattern 2: the conversational booking form
For hospitality, tourism and appointment-led businesses, the booking experience should feel like a conversation, not paperwork.
A Teignmouth guest house, an Exeter restaurant or a Bovey Tracey therapist can run a Gravity Forms conversational form that presents one question at a time, like a chat: "How many in your party?" "What date?" "Time?" "Name and contact details?". The form integrates a date picker that respects real availability — booked dates greyed out, only valid times shown.
The booking lands fully qualified. No "is 7pm Saturday available?" emails. The reservation is captured at the moment of interest, before the visitor has time to compare three other options.
Pattern 3: the multi-page onboarding form
Some businesses genuinely need a lot of information up-front. A Devon solicitor taking on a new client, an accountant onboarding a new business, a financial adviser running a fact-find — all need pages of detail.
A single long page of fifty fields kills the conversion. Visitors take one look and close the tab. A multi-page form with a progress bar — "Step 1 of 4: Personal Details" "Step 2 of 4: Business Details" — feels manageable. Each step is short. The progress bar gives the visitor a sense of momentum. Completion rates on multi-page forms typically run 2–3x single-page forms of equivalent length.
We add save-and-resume so a visitor can pause and come back. We send an email summary on completion so they have a record. The form lands in the practitioner's inbox already structured by category.
Pattern 4: the post-purchase feedback form
Customers you have already won are the cheapest source of insight you have. A retailer on Queen Street in Newton Abbot, an online seller of Devon-made products, a service business that just completed a job — all benefit from a structured feedback request.
The mechanic: a Gravity Forms survey triggered by purchase or job completion, sent via email a few days after the transaction. Star rating for service, multiple-choice for what they bought, free text for suggestions, optional reviewer's name and town for use in testimonials. We can offer a small thank-you incentive (a discount code, a chance in a prize draw) to lift response rates.
The data feeds into improving the service, building social proof on the site (with consent), and identifying which products or services are working hardest.
What this costs you
Gravity Forms with Pro add-ons is included on every site we build and host. A starter site at £250 gets one or two of these patterns built into the brief. The £300/month retainer covers ongoing tweaks, new forms as your business needs them, and integration with email tools and CRMs.
If your current contact form is doing nothing but emailing you a name and a question, send your URL to 07887 988780 and we will spec the upgrade.
