Devon Tourism Websites: What Visitors Actually Want from Your Site

Devon's tourism sites get judged by a customer who is looking at twelve other places at the same time and probably booking on a phone, in a service station car park, on a tea break in a Birmingham office. What they want from your site has very little to do with what most Devon tourism site owners think they want. Here is the reality, from years of building these sites.

They want to know exactly where you are

Generic "South Devon" or "near Dartmoor" is useless. Visitors plan their week around drive times, train stations and what is reachable for a day out. Your site should say, plainly: nearest town (Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey, Ashburton, Teignmouth, whichever), distance and drive time to the major regional draws (Dartmoor, the English Riviera, the South West Coast Path), nearest train station, nearest A38 access. A Google Maps embed showing your actual location.

A Dartmoor holiday let owner who refuses to put a postcode on the website "for security" is losing bookings. The visitor needs to know where they will be sleeping before they will book.

They want recent, honest photos

Stock photography of beaches and moorland kills tourism conversions. The visitor knows what Devon looks like in a stock photo. What they need to see is: your specific property, the actual view from the actual window, the kitchen they will be cooking in, the bathroom with its real tiles, the path from the car park to the front door at 8pm in October when they will arrive.

Photos taken on a phone in good light beat poorly-lit professional photography. Photos taken in the actual season the visitor is booking for beat photos taken once in July. A guest house in Teignmouth showing seafront photos in November storm light is more honest and more memorable than the same place showing only sunny August shots.

They want to book on the page they are on

Every tourism site should let the visitor check availability and book without leaving the site. A booking widget from a channel manager (Little Hotelier, Beds24, SiteMinder, Lodgify for holiday lets) embedded directly on the homepage. Not a "check availability" button that goes to an external site. Not a phone-only enquiry. A widget, on the page, working on mobile.

Direct bookings from your own site are also more profitable than channel bookings. A holiday let owner moving 30% of bookings from Booking.com to direct via their own site claws back the 15% commission and owns the customer relationship.

They want a clear cancellation policy

Cancellation policy goes on the booking page, in plain English, before the visitor enters card details. "Free cancellation up to 14 days before arrival, 50% after that, no refund within 48 hours" is fine. What kills bookings is hidden cancellation terms that only appear in the booking confirmation.

They want practical answers

The "FAQ" section on a tourism site should answer the actual questions visitors have. Not "what makes us special" but: is parking free, is there Wi-Fi, what is the Wi-Fi speed actually like, can we bring a dog, is there a pub within walking distance, what time is check-in, what time is check-out, are there any noise restrictions, is there a hot tub and what does it actually look like.

A Dartmoor holiday let owner who answers the practical questions properly converts twice as well as one who writes flowery copy about peace and tranquillity.

They want fast pages on mobile

Most tourism searches happen on mobile. Most are happening with patchy 4G — service stations, country lanes, holiday-cottage gardens. A site that takes seven seconds to load loses the visitor before they have seen the photos.

Our static-HTML ShoutFast platform is purpose-built for this — Devon tourism sites loading in under a second on mobile, even on a poor signal. PageSpeed scores at 95+ as standard. Bookings widget integrated. Channel-manager compatible.

What it costs

A focused Devon tourism site with the elements above sits within a £300 a month retainer for active updates and content. A starter site for a single holiday let or B&B at the £250 tier covers the foundation if you do not need ongoing content work.

If you are a Devon tourism operator with a slow or generic website, twenty minutes on the phone is usually enough to know what would move the booking rate. The number is 07887 988780 when you are ready.
