Click-to-Call: Why Devon Trade Businesses Lose Mobile Customers Without It

Click-to-Call: Why Devon Trade Businesses Lose Mobile Customers Without It

Most Devon trade businesses we audit are leaving money on the table for one daft reason: their phone number on the website is not tappable on mobile. Somebody in a leaking bathroom in Teignmouth has reached your site, found your phone number, and now needs to either retype it, copy and paste it, or memorise it. Half of them give up and try the next plumber. Click-to-call is the fix and it takes about ten minutes.

What it actually is

Click-to-call is a phone number on your website that, when tapped on a mobile device, opens the phone's dialler with the number ready to go. One tap to call. The HTML is trivial — a tel: link wrapped around the phone number — and every modern mobile browser supports it.

The version most Devon trade sites have is the phone number written as plain text on the contact page. That works for desktop visitors, who can read and type. It is hostile to mobile visitors, who cannot.

Why it matters more for trade businesses

The customer journey for a trade call-out is short and urgent. Boiler down. Lock broken. Roof leaking after the night's storm. The decision to phone is being made fast, on a phone, often outside the customer's home. The friction of typing a number is enough to make somebody try the next result instead.

Industry data suggests roughly 60% of local-trade searches happen on mobile. Of those, most convert by phone, not by form. If your form is the only friction-free path to contact you, you are catching a fraction of the demand.

What the setup looks like

Three places the phone number must be a tappable link:

1. Header on every page. Top right or top left, large enough to tap with a thumb, ideally with a phone icon next to it. On mobile, the header phone link should be visible without scrolling.

2. Footer on every page. Belt-and-braces. Some visitors scroll to the bottom looking for contact info because that is where most websites put it.

3. Within the body of every service page. "If your boiler is making the noise we describe here, call us on (number)" — phrased naturally, with the number as a link.

On mobile, a permanent floating call button at the bottom of the screen is also worth adding for trade businesses. It costs nothing in performance and it is genuinely useful for the boiler-down customer.

The wrong way to do it

Common mistakes we see on Devon trade sites:

  • Phone number as part of an image (Google cannot read it, mobile cannot tap it).
  • Phone number in a CSS background image (same problem, harder to fix).
  • Phone number in the contact page only — invisible on every other page.
  • Phone number formatted with spaces in a way that breaks the tel: link on some Android browsers.
  • Click-to-call buttons that go to a page that says "click to call" rather than actually dialling.

The right format is straightforward: <a href="tel:+447887988780">07887 988780</a> with appropriate styling. Google's structured data should also have the phone number marked up as telephone in your Local Business schema.

What it does for conversion

The numbers vary by sector but the direction is consistent. Trade businesses that add proper click-to-call see mobile conversion improvements in the 20-50% range, often within weeks. The visitors were already there; you were just losing them at the last yard.

For a Newton Abbot trade business getting 200 visits a month on mobile, even a 25% conversion uplift on the call rate is meaningful new work — and it costs nothing in ad spend.

What we put on every Devon trade site we build

Every trade-business site we build at the £250 starter level includes click-to-call as standard. Phone number tappable in the header, in the footer, on every service page, and as a floating mobile button. Local Business schema with the number marked up. The number tested on iPhone, Android and an older flip-phone Android because some Devon trade customers are still on those.

If your trade site does not have this set up, we can add it in an afternoon. The number, fittingly, is 07887 988780 — try tapping it on your phone and see what your own site does.
