A shop is the part of a website that has to keep working at three in the morning. Stock has to be accurate. Payments have to clear. The delivery postcode rules cannot let somebody in Aberdeen order a same-day local bouquet. Over the last decade or so we have built and rebuilt shops on WooCommerce — the WordPresse-commerce platform that powers around a third of all online stores worldwide — for clients in Newton Abbot, across Devon and out as far as Yorkshire and Harrogate. This is a tour through some of those launches and what each one taught us.
2020 Flowers, Newton Abbot — the local-delivery florist
Karen at 2020 Flowers on Wolborough Street has been a long-running client. The first WooCommerce shop we built for the business launched in time for Valentine's 2019 — a focused storefront with same-day local delivery restricted to the right cluster of Newton Abbot postcodes. A florist that takes orders for "delivery anywhere in the UK" without thinking through the logistics ends up either disappointing customers or losing money on couriers, and the postcode-restriction work was the most important single thing on the site.
In 2020 we rebuilt the site again — a full design refresh and a smarter shop. The product taxonomy was reworked around occasions (Valentines, Mothers' Day, anniversaries, sympathy) rather than just flower types, because that is how customers actually search. Essentify launched as a brand-new shop on WooCommerce, built with Divi Pixel for the design layer. A brand launch is a different problem from a rebuild — there is no existing customer base to migrate, no historic SKUs to import, and every decision is being made for the first time. Renovate Like Kate — courses and content alongside the shop
Kate Sandhu's Renovate Like Kate site combines a WooCommerce shop with a member-only training area, served through a learning-management plugin sitting alongside Woo. That combination — physical product, digital download and gated training content all on one site, with a single login for the customer — is one of the strongest reasons to choose WordPress and Woo over a closed platform. Rentec — energy and renewable-services brochure with shop functionality
Rentec Ltd is a Devon-based renewable energy company — solar panels, ground source heating systems, the kind of installation that begins with a survey rather than an "add to cart". Their site at rentec.uk is primarily a brochure with quote-request flow, but the WooCommerce backbone gives them a route to add accessories, replacement parts or service plans as a shop later without rebuilding. Building Woo into a brochure site from the start is cheap; bolting it on three years later is expensive.
Adrenalin Clothing — Amazon-backed adventure clothing
Adrenalin Clothing launched as a low-cost adventure clothing site backed by Amazon's product listings — the website does the brand work and the discovery, Amazon handles the fulfilment. WooCommerce supports affiliate-style product types alongside its own shop products, which is what made that hybrid model possible without a custom build.
Harrogate SSP — site refresh with locked content area
Harrogate SSP is one of the further-afield clients on this list — Yorkshire rather than Devon — and the rebuild combined a new theme with a locked content area for paying members. WooCommerce handles the membership purchase; a content-restriction plugin handles access. The shop and the gated section share one login and one customer record.
Our reference build — DiviFast and ShopGreat
Two shops in this list are not client work but our own reference builds. DiviFast Shopping (divifast.com/shopping) is a fully-featured WordPress + Divi Pixel + WooCommerce build that needs only a Stripe key to be a working shop — we use it as a "this is what your shop could look like" demo for prospective clients. ShopGreat (shopgreat.co.uk) is the opposite extreme — a single-page, single-product shop, built for clients who do not need a catalogue, just one well-presented product with a frictionless checkout. Both demonstrate that "WooCommerce shop" is a category, not a template.
Why WooCommerce, and what Devon retailers should know
People often ask whether WooCommerce is still the right call against Shopify or Squarespace. For most Devon retailers we work with, the answer is yes, for three reasons. You own your site. There is no monthly platform fee that grows with your turnover, no risk of being de-listed because somebody's automated trust system flagged your account. You can extend it. A flower shop today is a flower shop with delivery zones tomorrow, a flower shop with subscriptions next year, a flower shop with a wholesale account portal the year after. WooCommerce extends in every direction. It plays nicely with WordPress. Your blog, your booking forms, your members' area and your shop all sit on one site, share one customer database and one login.
The trade-off is that WooCommerce sites need proper hosting and proper maintenance. PageSpeed scores on our shops typically sit in the 90s, which matters because shop conversion drops measurably for every second of load time.
