International Client Websites: Beyond Devon

The Newton Abbot office is the centre of the work but it is not the boundary of the work. Over the years we have built websites for British clients who run businesses in Spain, for community choirs in coastal Andalusia, for educational platforms serving US and Middle Eastern students, and for an Australian community orchestra in Fremantle. International work brings a separate set of practical questions to the brief — timezones, hosting locations, currency, language, payment localisation — and the answers are not always what people expect. This is a tour of those projects and what each one taught us.

Legal Services Direct — British wills in Spain

We design and host the Legal Services Direct website at legalservices.direct, which serves British expatriates living in Spain who need wills written under Spanish jurisdiction. It is a regulated legal-services category with a specific cross-border audience — UK-born clients, Spanish-resident, English-speaking but with Spanish legal questions. The site is in English, the hosting sits on UK infrastructure (better latency for the UK-based decision-makers and family members involved in the enquiry), and the trust signals on the site lean on the British professional context as much as the Spanish one. Cross-border legal sites have to be careful not to offer advice they are not qualified to give in either jurisdiction, and the copy was written with that constraint in mind.

Nerja Pop Choir, Costa del Sol — branding and identity

The Nerja Pop Choir is a community choir on the Costa del Sol that came to us for a logo to launch the choir, which we then extended into t-shirt artwork for the founding members. Not every international engagement is a full website — sometimes the brief is exactly to do the visual identity work for a group whose web presence will live on a Facebook page or a community noticeboard. Branding work that travels has to be simple, screen-printable and immediately recognisable, because it will end up reproduced on amateur kit by people who are not designers. A clean wordmark and a single distinctive shape is usually the right answer.

Teen Un Me — USA and Abu Dhabi

Teen Un Me at teenunme.com is a substantial WordPress build for a service helping US teenagers (and overseas students applying to US universities) navigate the application process. We rebuilt the site on WordPress with the Divi theme and added a LearnDash-powered learning area for the course content, plus Gravity Forms and Gravity View for application data capture and reporting. The audience spans the US east coast and Abu Dhabi, so timezone-friendly support is built in: documented response times, asynchronous communication where possible, no requirement for live UK-hours phone calls. Educational platforms with international users live or die on async clarity.

Community Orchestra Fremantle, Western Australia

Community Orchestras Fremantle at communityorchestras.org.au is the Australian piece in our portfolio — a community orchestra in Western Australia whose website we originally built around 2018 and revisited about five years later for an update with the Divi theme and redrawn logos. There is a candid technical note worth keeping: the site is hosted in Australia, and at one point did not have an SSL certificate set up, which made it appear fragmented from UK browsers. That is the kind of detail you only notice when you visit your client's site from a long way away, and it is exactly why hosting decisions matter for international projects. UK clients with overseas sites should generally host where the audience is, but the SSL certificate is non-negotiable everywhere.

Domains and adjacent projects

Some of our international-flavoured work is small and adjacent — for example we have managed the Czech-flavoured checo.co.uk domain (currently for sale). That is not a client build but it sits on the same hosting and admin infrastructure, and it is a useful reminder that domain portfolio management is part of the picture when a Devon agency works internationally.

What international clients should consider

A few principles travel with all of these projects. Hosting where the audience is. Latency matters more than people expect. SSL on every site, always. Even community sites; the trust cost of "not secure" is too high. Language and tone for the actual audience. UK English for British expats, US English for US students, careful Spanish or Arabic translation only where a native speaker can review it. Async-friendly support. International clients cannot all be on a UK working-hours phone call; clear written documentation, a ticket system or a shared workspace makes a real difference. Currency and payment localisation. Stripe handles most of this for us, but the visible price needs to be the price the customer expects, in the currency they pay in.

If you run a business based in Devon with international customers, or you are based overseas and need a UK-built website, we are happy to discuss what that looks like in practice. Sites from £250, with a £300 per month retainer covering hosting, security and ongoing content. Call or WhatsApp 07887 988780.
