Canoe clubs are run by volunteers in evenings and weekends. The website cannot demand a content team. It has to handle session bookings, members' news, river-condition updates and new-paddler enquiries on its own — and it has to keep working when the club secretary changes every two years. Over the last decade we have built and rebuilt websites for canoe and kayak clubs across Devon, with a few further-afield projects in San Francisco, NorCal and the US west coast that grew out of the same paddling network. Here is a tour of those builds and what each one taught us about the category.
Teignbridge Canoe Club, Newton Abbot
Teignbridge Canoe Club is a long-standing client and the closest of these projects to home — the club paddles out of Teignmouth and the Teign estuary, ten minutes from our Newton Abbot office. We built the original site, then returned in 2021 for a full re-brand and rebuild around new club colours. The current site at teigncanoe.org.uk runs WordPress and Divi with a member-only chat and notice area for paddling-night updates, river-level reports and paddle-buddy requests. Centralising that conversation on the club site rather than scattering it across Facebook and WhatsApp is the change clubs ask for most often.
Exeter Canoe Club
Exeter Canoe Club paddles the Exe and the wider south-west river network. Their site at exetercanoeclub.org.uk had a refresh through us a few years back and has run cleanly since — a calendar of trips, a coaching pathway, a way for new paddlers to get in touch without first having to find a committee member's email. A canoe club site is mostly about lowering the barrier between the curious newcomer and their first session, and the design choices follow from that.

We launched the IBEX Brixham Canoe Club website in 2023 — a fresh club, a fresh site at ibexcanoeclub.org.uk. Brixham gives the club an unusual paddling environment: harbour water for sheltered training, open coast within minutes for sea kayak progression. The site reflects that range, with separate sections for new paddlers, coastal trips and club governance. New clubs especially benefit from a website that looks established on day one — it changes how seriously prospective members and venue partners treat the enquiry.
Disabled Sailing Torbay
The Disabled Sailing Association at disabledsailingassociation.org.uk sits adjacent to paddlesport in our portfolio — same coastline, same volunteer-run structure, same accessibility and safety questions. The site emphasises the practical detail any prospective sailor needs before they turn up for a session: what to wear, how the lift hoist works, what to do if you have not been on water before. Charitable and inclusion-focused organisations especially need a website that answers the awkward questions plainly, because a confused first visit drives people away.
Open Canoe Association
The Open Canoe Association at opencanoe.info is a national open-canoe (Canadian-style, single-blade paddle) group rather than a Devon-only club. Their website handles a wider geography, a national events calendar and a magazine archive. It is a useful counter-example: where a local club website is mostly an introduction, a national association site is mostly a database of membership benefits, and the IA reflects that.
Paddlesport beyond Devon
Several of our paddlesport projects grew out of contacts with Sean Morley — a well-known UK paddler who relocated to California — and ended up serving the US west coast paddling community. Progressive Paddlesports Coaching in San Francisco, run by Sean Morley and Jennifer Yearly (whose own coaching site sits at paddletowardsit.com), launched at progressivepaddlesportscoaching.com — a kayak and SUP coaching business teaching, among other places, under the Golden Gate Bridge. NorCal Paddlers at norcalpaddlers.org is a community trip-planning hub for Northern California kayakers, surf skiers and stand-up paddlers. The US West Coast Surf Kayak Team at uswestsurfkayak.org carries the team's competition results, training calendar and selection process. Alongside the websites, we designed the Vortex Paddle Series logo for a San Francisco Bay paddle-racing series — a deliberately simple mark that holds up screen-printed onto a t-shirt or stitched onto a buoyancy aid.
What canoe and kayak clubs need from a website
Looking across these builds, a few things are non-negotiable. A new-paddler funnel that does not require committee email. A taster-session enquiry form that drops into a single inbox the duty officer actually checks, with no login and no captcha to make it harder than it needs to be. A members-only area that is genuinely useful. Session results, last-minute trip changes, kit-list updates — content the club would otherwise post in a closed Facebook group. A mobile-fast site. Most of the visits will be from phones, often with patchy mobile data riverside. PageSpeed scores in the 90s matter. A safety and inclusion page that answers the awkward questions. What about non-swimmers, what about disabilities, what about under-18s. The clubs that get this right grow steadily; the ones that hide it lose people at the gate.
