Divi 5 is a complete rebuild of the Divi page builder, the most-used premium WordPress framework in the world. 1. Shortcode-free rendering
Divi 4 (and most legacy WordPress page builders) use shortcodes — bracket-based markup like [et<em>pb</em>section] that the server has to translate into HTML on every page load. That parsing tax is significant. On a 30-section homepage it can add 200-400ms to first contentful paint.

Contact HereDivi 5 doesn't use shortcodes. The page output is direct, semantic HTML with class hooks. The result, on identical content, is a 30-50% reduction in time-to-first-byte. We see this consistently in our staging tests against the Divi 4 version of the same site.
2. Modern CSS layout (Flexbox and Grid)
The old version of Divi used a float-based grid that struggled with complex layouts on mobile. Divi 5 uses Flexbox and CSS Grid natively. This sounds like inside baseball but the practical impact is large: layouts adapt cleanly to every screen size without the manual breakpoint tweaks Divi 4 needed, and the resulting CSS is roughly 40% smaller.
For a Newton Abbot trades or hospitality site that lives or dies on mobile UX, this is the single most useful change.
3. Preset-based design system
In Divi 4, applying a consistent button style across a 30-page site meant updating buttons individually. In Divi 5, presets propagate — change the primary button style once, and every primary button on the site updates. This is how proper design systems work and it's a quiet revolution for client work.
The practical benefit: when a client wants to refresh their brand colours six months after launch, we charge for thirty minutes of work, not three hours.
4. Native nested rows
Magazine-style layouts with content blocks inside content blocks used to require custom code or third-party child themes. Divi 5 supports nested rows natively. This means complex layouts (sidebar-with-cards, two-column-with-pull-quotes, image-grid-with-captions) build cleanly without bolt-on plugins.
Less code means fewer attack surfaces and faster sites.
5. Future-proof against the WordPress core direction
WordPress is migrating towards block-based editing and full-site editing under the Gutenberg project. Divi 5 is built to coexist with that direction rather than fight it — its underlying architecture is closer to native blocks than Divi 4 ever was. That means client sites we build today will continue to receive updates and remain compatible with WordPress core for the foreseeable future.
What this means for a Newton Abbot business
In concrete terms: the Divi 5 sites we ship score 95+ on Google PageSpeed mobile. They pass Core Web Vitals cleanly. They look modern, work fast on phones, and don't require the constant plugin-juggling that Divi 4 sites needed.

Migrating an existing site
