Speed Up Your WordPress Site: A Devon Small Business Guide
A slow WordPress site is the single biggest fixable problem on most Devon small business websites. Visitors leave when a page takes more than three seconds to load on mobile, Google ranks slow sites lower in local results, and you do not need to spend money on traffic to fix the leak. Here is what to do, in the order that gives the best return.
Step 1: Find out where you actually stand
Run your site through PageSpeed Insights and through GTmetrix. Note your mobile score, your Largest Contentful Paint number and your Total Blocking Time. If your mobile score is below 50, you have a lot to gain. Below 70, still worth doing. Above 90 and you are in good shape — focus elsewhere.
The Devon-specific note: test your site on a 4G connection somewhere on the A38 corridor or out toward Ashburton if you can, not just on a fibre line in town. A fair share of your customers are looking at your site on patchy signal, and that is the real test.

Cheap shared hosting is the most common cause of slow Devon WordPress sites. If you are paying £3 a month for hosting and wondering why your site is slow, the answer is "you are paying £3 a month for hosting".

Step 3: Compress every image
WordPress sites get bloated by uncompressed images. A 4MB photo straight off a phone has no business being on a homepage. Tools to fix it: ShortPixel, Imagify or Smush will batch-compress your media library. Then convert to WebP — modern format, much smaller file size, supported by every browser worth caring about.
A homepage that loads 15MB of images is going to be slow no matter what else you do. Get the total page weight under 2MB if you can.
Step 4: Audit your plugins
Open Plugins Installed Plugins and look at the list with honest eyes. Anything you have not used in six months can probably go. Anything that does one small thing where there is a faster lighter alternative can be swapped.
The big offenders we see on Devon WordPress sites: heavy slider plugins, social media feed plugins that load multiple JavaScript libraries, contact form plugins that load on every page even though the form only appears on one page, and "page builder" plugins running on top of an already-built theme.
Step 5: Caching
Caching plugins generate static versions of your pages so the server does not rebuild them on every visit. WP Rocket is the paid pick. LiteSpeed Cache is excellent if your hosting supports it. W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache are free and will do the job for most small sites.
Set up the basics — page caching, browser caching, GZIP compression — and you will see a meaningful improvement. Get the minify and combine settings right and you will see another step up.
Step 6: Use a CDN
A content delivery network serves your images and CSS from servers near the visitor. Cloudflare's free tier is genuinely good and adds about 30 minutes of setup. For a Devon business site that is mostly serving Devon visitors the gain is smaller than for a national site, but it is still worth doing — and the security side benefits are real.
Step 7: Database cleanup
WordPress databases accumulate cruft — old post revisions, transients, spam comments, expired sessions. WP-Optimize or a similar plugin run quarterly will keep things tidy and queries fast.
When this is not enough
If you have done the lot and you are still under 70 on mobile, the bottleneck is usually the theme. Bloated themes with too much built-in JavaScript are common.
