Local SEO is the work that gets your business found when somebody nearby searches for what you do. For a Devon small business — a plumber in Newton Abbot, a B&B in Torquay, a cafe in Teignmouth — it is usually the single most valuable digital marketing channel. This is the checklist we run for new clients on the £300/month retainer. None of it is mysterious; most of it just needs doing properly and kept up.
Step 1: Google Business Profile
This is the foundation. Before anything else:
- Claim and verify your profile. Verification is by postcard, video or phone call depending on category.
- Name, address, phone — exact match to what is on your website. Same capitalisation, same punctuation.
- Primary category — pick the most specific one that fits. "Plumber" beats "Home services contractor". Add up to nine secondary categories.
- Description — 750 characters. Write it for humans, not for keyword stuffing. Mention your town and the surrounding area you serve.
- Photos — minimum 10, including a real exterior shot, a team shot, two interior or work-in-progress shots, and a logo. Add new photos monthly.
- Hours — including holiday hours. Set them when you set up the profile and adjust seasonally.
- Messaging — turn it on if you can answer within a few hours. Turn it off if you cannot. A messaging button that goes unanswered hurts you.
Step 2: On-page website optimisation
Each page on your site should:
We are ready to talk things through!
Contact Here- Have a unique title tag including a primary keyword and your town
- Have a unique meta description, written for humans, around 155 characters
- Have one H1 that matches the page topic
- Mention your town and surrounding postcodes naturally in the first 100 words
- Have proper image alt text on every image
- Have LocalBusiness schema markup (on the homepage at least)
- Load in under three seconds on mobile
For a multi-location Devon business, build a separate page per town — Newton Abbot, Torquay, Exeter, Teignmouth — with genuinely different content on each, not the same page with the town name find-and-replaced.
Step 3: Local link building
The directories that matter for Devon businesses:
- General: Google Business Profile (covered above), Bing Places, Apple Maps Connect, Yelp UK, Yell.com
- Devon-specific: Devon Live, Newton Abbot's local trade associations, the chamber of commerce sites
- Industry-specific: Checkatrade for trades, Trustist for retail, TripAdvisor for hospitality, RateMyAgent for estate agents
- Sponsorships: Sponsoring a local sports team, Newton Abbot races, a school PTA event, the Devon County Show — these generate genuine local links
Skip the global "submit your site to 1,000 directories" services. Most of those directories are spam and Google ignores them at best, penalises them at worst.
Step 4: Reviews
Aim for steady review velocity rather than a sudden burst. Five reviews a month sustained beats fifty in one week.
- Email or text every customer two days after the job, with a direct link to your Google review form
- Respond to every review — positive and negative — within 48 hours
- Embed your top three reviews on the homepage
- Repurpose reviews as social media content
Step 5: Local content
The content that earns local rankings is the content that is genuinely about your local area:
- Case studies of jobs done in named Devon towns and postcodes
- Pages about specific local services ("emergency boiler repair Newton Abbot", "wedding venue Torquay")
- Blog posts that mention real Devon places and events naturally
- Geo-tagged photos posted to Google Business Profile and Instagram
Step 6: Tracking
Set up before you start, not after:
- Google Search Console (free)
- Google Analytics 4 (free)
- Local rank tracking — we use Local Falcon for grid-view rank checks across Devon postcodes
- Conversion tracking on your contact form and click-to-call
FAQ
How long until I see rankings? 4–8 weeks for low-competition local terms; 3–6 months for mid-competition; 6–12 months for the most competitive Devon terms.
Do I have to do all of this myself? No. The £300/month retainer covers all of the above as ongoing work.
