The Practical Guide to Launching a Members-Only Section

Adding a members-only section to your existing website is one of the highest-leverage changes you can make. Done right, it turns one-off customers into a recurring revenue base. Done badly, it becomes another half-finished feature that nobody logs into. This guide walks through the steps in the order we run them with Devon clients, from first conversation to launch day.

Step 1: Decide what is behind the wall

Before any plugins go on, decide what members get that non-members do not. The members-only sections that succeed all share one trait: clear, specific value that someone would pay for even if your free content stayed exactly as it is today. Vague promises of "exclusive content coming soon" do not retain paying members past month two.

Worked examples we have built:

Changing to a Shout Websites site is a good idea! - Are you ready?

We are ready to talk things through!

Contact Here
  • A yoga studio in Torbay — 60+ on-demand classes, weekly new content, members-only workshop pricing
  • A small accountancy in Newton Abbot — secure document portal, monthly tax bulletin, priority phone access
  • A canoe coach in Teignbridge — training plans, video critique uploads, fixtures and safety briefings

If you cannot describe the offer in one sentence, you are not ready to build it yet.

Step 2: Pick your tiers and price them

We recommend starting with one tier — maybe two if you have a clearly differentiated higher-value offer. Three or more tiers paralyse new visitors. Common starter shapes:

  • Single tier at £10–£25/month — content-only memberships
  • Two tiers (e.g. £15/month and £45/month) — basic content plus a higher-touch tier with personal access
  • Annual option discounted 15–20% — improves retention

Stripe is the cleanest payment gateway for UK businesses. PayPal works too if your audience prefers it. We typically enable both.

Step 3: Choose the software

For most Devon businesses we build on top of WordPress and Divi 5 with Restrict Content Pro managing memberships. This combination handles:

  • Member registration and account pages
  • Recurring billing through Stripe or PayPal
  • Content restriction at page, post or section level
  • Drip-feed release (release week 2 content seven days after sign-up, etc.)
  • Member-only emails

For training-heavy memberships we add LearnDash for course structure and progress tracking. For event-based work we add The Events Calendar.

Step 4: Build the welcome flow

The first 48 hours after a member signs up determine retention more than anything else. Plan and write these before launch:

  1. The "you're in" email immediately after payment — clear instructions, login link, where to start
  2. A welcome video on the first members-only page — under 90 seconds, you on camera, warm
  3. A 7-day onboarding email sequence pointing to the highest-value pieces of content
  4. A members-only Slack, Discord or forum if community is part of the offer

Step 5: Soft-launch to a list you already have

Do not announce to the world on day one. Open to your existing email list or top 10 customers first, at a founding-member discount, in exchange for honest feedback. We have seen membership sites that flew straight to public launch crash inside a week because logins didn't work properly on iPhone Safari, or because the welcome email landed in spam. A two-week soft launch catches all of that.

Step 6: Plan content for at least six months ahead

Membership sites die when the founder runs out of energy in month three. Map out what new content arrives in members-only every week or month for the first six months before you take the first payment. If you cannot fill six months of weekly drops, the offer is too narrow — broaden it, or pick a less aggressive content schedule.

What this costs

The members-only section sits inside our standard WordPress and Divi 5 build. Restrict Content Pro is included with our builds. Build cost starts at £250 for a small site; ongoing support and content updates are £300/month.
