Every web designer and agency owner gets a hundred spam emails a month from "SEO experts" promising page-one rankings for a fee. We ignore them. So should you. This page sets out how we actually do search engine optimisation for Devon small business websites — what works, what we won't do, and what to expect from a real local SEO programme.
The three things that actually matter
After 26+ years of building and ranking websites, the SEO that moves the needle for a Devon small business comes down to three things, in order:
- Real, useful content on the page. Google ranks pages, not websites. If a plumber wants to rank for "boiler repair Newton Abbot", there has to be a page on the site about boiler repair in Newton Abbot, and it has to actually be about that, with proper depth — what brands, what call-out fees, what the typical fault patterns look like, what postcodes you serve.
- The right keywords in the right places. Title tag, meta description, H1, the first 100 words of the page, image alt text, the URL slug. We use SEO-Press on every WordPress site we build, and the keyword work is set up properly at launch — not bolted on six months later.
- Links from real, relevant websites. When we launch a new client site, the first thing we do is link to it from our own news and portfolio. That gets the page indexed within 24 hours. The longer-term work is real local links — Devon directories that matter (not the spammy global ones), local press coverage where we can get it, partnerships with related Devon businesses, sponsorships of community events.
What we will not do
- Buy links from PBNs (private blog networks). Google penalises this and recovery is painful.
- Stuff keywords into pages until they read like nonsense.
- Promise page-one rankings in 30 days. Nobody can deliver that honestly for a competitive term.
- Run grey-hat tactics that risk a manual action against your site. We build for the long term, not the next quarter.

Contact Here- Google Business Profile. Claimed, verified, fully completed — categories, services, hours, photos, opening hours, attributes. Posts updated weekly. Reviews actively requested.
- NAP consistency. Your business name, address and phone number must be identical across your website, GBP, Yelp, Bing Places, the Devon directories, and any industry directories. Inconsistency confuses Google.
- Location landing pages. A separate page for each town you serve — Newton Abbot, Torquay, Teignmouth, Exeter — with genuinely different content per page, not the same page with the town name swapped out.
- Schema markup. LocalBusiness schema on every page, properly filled in. Service schema where applicable. Review schema where you have real reviews.
Realistic timelines
A new website with proper SEO from launch will typically rank for low-competition local terms within 4–8 weeks, mid-competition within 3–6 months, and competitive terms within 6–12 months. Anybody promising faster is either spending heavily on PPC (which is fine but is not SEO) or running risky tactics.
What it costs
Ongoing SEO sits inside our £300/month retainer alongside hosting, plugin updates, security and content changes. We do not sell standalone SEO packages because, in our experience, SEO that isn't connected to the actual website build and ongoing content is half-effective.
FAQ
Will my site reach page one of Google? For local terms, very likely. For national or global terms, depends on the competition.
Do I need to write blog posts? Helpful, not essential. We can ghostwrite content as part of the retainer if you would rather not.
Do I need to be on Yelp / Bing / TripAdvisor / etc? The relevant ones for your sector, yes. Not all of them.
