For an Exeter business, your website does the work that the High Street used to do on its own. It is the first thing somebody sees when they search for an electrician in St Thomas, a dog-friendly cafe near the Quay or a wedding photographer who covers the Cathedral. If the site is slow, hard to use on a phone or invisible to Google, the customer simply scrolls to the next result. There is no shop window doing the heavy lifting in the background.
The belief that a website which performs well must therefore be expensive is the one we want to take apart in this piece. It is no longer true, and it has not been true for a few years. With modern tools and a well-honed process, fast, high-ranking and affordable can all sit on the same site.
The old "good, fast, cheap — pick two" trade-off
For decades the conventional wisdom was that any project forces you to choose two of three: good quality, fast delivery, low price. Applied to web design this gave you three uncomfortable options. A high-performance, high-ranking site that took six months and cost five figures. A cheap site that loaded slowly and never showed up on Google. Or a fast, cheap site that looked passable until you tried to use it on a phone.
We are ready to talk things through!
Contact HereThat model assumed every site had to be hand-coded from a blank file. Modern WordPress, properly used, changes the maths. The framework, the editor, the hosting and the optimisation tooling have all matured to the point where a small agency can build genuinely good sites in a fraction of the time, and pass the saving on without cutting corners on quality.
How we build for high speed
A fast-loading site is no longer a nice-to-have. Over half of mobile users abandon a site that takes more than three seconds to load, and Core Web Vitals — the speed metrics Google now uses as a ranking signal — are a hard floor for visibility. Our sites consistently score 95+ on Google PageSpeed, and that number is built in from the first day rather than chased at the end.
The approach is straightforward. We build on WordPress with Divi 5, which has been re-engineered for performance — cleaner output, smaller JavaScript bundles and more intelligent loading than the previous generation of page builders. Every image is compressed and converted to WebP before it goes near the site. Caching is configured at server level. We use UK-based hosting so data does not have to travel from Virginia or Frankfurt to reach your Exeter customers. And critically, we do not bolt on a "speed plugin" at the end and call it done — the speed comes from how the site is built, not from a tool that tries to retrofit it.
How we build for high Google rankings
Speed gets you eligible to rank. Local SEO gets you actually ranking. For an Exeter business the priority is showing up when somebody nearby searches for what you do — "emergency electrician St Thomas", "EV charger installation Pinhoe", "rewiring Heavitree", "vegan brunch Sidwell Street", "plumber Topsham". These are the searches with money behind them.
We start with the Google Business Profile, because for almost every local business it is the single biggest source of leads we can affect. Categories, services, opening hours, service areas, weekly Google Posts and a steady review pipeline all get put in place. On the website itself we build dedicated pages for each Exeter neighbourhood you genuinely serve, write content that answers real local questions ("how much does an extension cost in Exeter", "do I need planning permission in a conservation area near the Cathedral"), and add LocalBusiness schema so Google has a structured answer to "who is this and where are they". Mobile-friendly, HTTPS and a logical site structure are non-negotiable basics, but they are basics that an alarming number of competitor sites still get wrong.
How we keep it affordable
Sites from £250. That is not a loss leader; it is what efficiency looks like when you have done this for 26+ years and you have your own static-HTML CMS doing the heavy lifting at deploy time.
Three things make it work. First, we use the framework rather than fighting it. WordPress and Divi let us build a bespoke-looking design without coding every component from scratch, and we pass the saved hours straight to you. Second, our process is honed — discovery, sitemap, design, build, content, launch — with no wasted cycles. Third, our pricing is transparent. There are no monthly fees that creep, no premium plugin licences hidden inside a "platform fee", no up-sell list at sign-off.
The longer-term value matters more than the headline price. A site that ranks, loads quickly and converts visitors will pay for itself many times over in its first year. A cheap site that does none of those things costs you the lost leads, and then costs you again when you rebuild it eighteen months later. For an Exeter business competing against agencies in Bristol and London on the search results page, building it right the first time is what closes the gap.
