Climb the Google Rankings: Local SEO for Devon WordPress Sites

For Devon businesses on WordPress — and that's most of them — there is no real mystery to ranking on Google. There are five workstreams that matter, done steadily over months. The agencies promising first-page rankings in two weeks are either lying or about to do something to your site that will get you penalised.

Here is the honest version of how Devon WordPress sites climb.

1. Your Google Business Profile is the foundation

Before you change a line on your website, get the Google Business Profile right. It's free, it's owned by Google, and for nine in ten local searches it appears above your website in the results.

  • Verify and complete every section. Name, address, phone, website, hours including bank holidays, services with descriptions, products, attributes (free Wi-Fi, dog-friendly, accessible parking), photos uploaded weekly.
  • Categories matter. Choose your primary category exactly — "Italian restaurant" not "Restaurant" if that's what you are. Add secondary categories that actually apply.
  • Don't keyword-stuff the name. "The Good Plumber" is your business name. "The Good Plumber Newton Abbot Emergency Boiler 24/7" will get the listing suspended.
  • Reviews are the strongest single signal. Set up an automated review-request flow that sends an email or SMS the day after a job. Reply to every review, positive and negative.
  • Google Posts. Free, ranked, easy. Publish a Post a week minimum.

2. Hyper-local keywords are your route in

Generic "plumber" or "accountant" is a fight against the entire UK. The keywords that actually buy are the specific ones.

  • Think like the customer. "Loft conversions Newton Abbot", "period property restoration Totnes", "MOT garage Chudleigh", "wedding photographer Dartmoor".
  • Use real tools. Google Keyword Planner is free and good enough to start. Ahrefs or Semrush if you have the budget. Google's autocomplete and "people also ask" are valuable and free.
  • Weave them in naturally. Page titles, headings (H1, H2), service descriptions, blog posts, image alt text. Not stuffed into footers — Google has spotted that pattern for fifteen years.

3. Build a local content hub

Your blog is your strongest unused asset. Devon has a thousand questions on Google with no good answer. Be the one who writes the good answer.

  • Answer real local questions. "How long does a kitchen extension take in a Devon longhouse?" "What's the parking situation for the Sidmouth Folk Festival?" "Which Newton Abbot solicitors handle agricultural property?"
  • Build location pages for towns you genuinely serve. Real, distinct content per town — not the same paragraph with the place name swapped, which Google now ignores.
  • Showcase real local projects. "A new bathroom for a family in Kingsbridge" is far stronger than a generic "Bathroom Installation" gallery. Photographs, words, results.

4. Technical SEO with the right WordPress plugins

WordPress gives you most of what you need; you just need to enable it.

  • Install Rank Math or Yoast SEO. Either is fine. Both manage page titles, meta descriptions, sitemaps, schema and redirects.
  • Image optimisation. WebP or AVIF format, served at the right size. Plugins like ShortPixel or EWWW handle it.
  • Caching and speed. WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache or built-in static-HTML output (which is what our ShoutFast CMS does) keep load times under two seconds.
  • LocalBusiness schema. Add it. Rank Math has a one-click setup. It tells Google in machine-readable form that you are a local business at this address with these hours and these services.

5. Devon backlinks beat generic ones

A link from a Newton Abbot website is worth more for local rankings than a link from a generic UK site.

  • Local directories. Visit South Devon, Visit Devon, Devon Live business listings, chamber of commerce, BNI.
  • Sponsorship. Newton Abbot Carnival, the Devon County Show, local sports clubs — sponsorships often come with a thank-you link from the event website.
  • Sector partnerships. A Dartmoor wedding photographer guest-posting on a venue's blog. A South Hams architect featured on a builder's case study page.
